Any work that needs to be charged for or needs to be tracked to identify how the project is progressing compare to the plan will need to be timed and that data stored for latter use. This is nothing new and dates back to the early 1900's with the first time and motion studies. However the methods of data capture have often been time consuming themselves and have resulted in a compromise between accuracy and expense of capture.

This application aims to simplify the data capture process reducing it to a couple of mouse clicks. It's origins go back to 1999 when Automatic Time Accounting was first released. This achieved the aim of simplifying the data capture but this was achieved using MS Access 97 and required the user to have a full licensed copy of Access as the run time creation of the main screen was not supported by the run time libraries that could be distributed with a run time only license.

In the move away from a full blown Access application the fundamental idea of simple data capture to achieve accuracy was not lost. This application still relies on the user to make a couple of mouse clicks and at the end of each chunk of captured time, enter brief notes (or not if they so choose). The user can now capture data using 1 of two interfaces:

The local scripting host allows the user to start work after clicking a shortcut on their desktop which opens a dialogue showing the last project they worked on. If this is the project they are about to work on they click OK and the stop button is displayed. If they are starting work on a new project or doing more work on an old project then the user types the name of that project in the text box and then clicks OK to start the timer. Start dialogue
The stop button stays on the users desktop during the work period as a reminder to click it once that chunk of work is complete. When the OK button is clicked the stop work dialogue appears. Stop button
The user is then given the opportunity to enter brief details of what they have just done. Stop dialogue
The other way of capturing data uses a web browser that accesses the data from a Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS). This can be a local IIS or more likely an Intranet or Internet server. The trial available on this site shows how this works.

ReportBoth of the above methods can access the same data source which has a default report available. The IIS version allows viewing of the data through maintenance tools.
